OData

OData is an open standard for accessing data over web interfaces and one of the central integration options in Business Central.

OData (Open Data Protocol) defines how data is queried and modified over HTTP. Business Central exposes tables and pages as OData endpoints so external systems can read from and write to them.

In practice, OData is typically used to exchange orders, items, customers and documents — for instance between an online shop and the ERP. Alongside OData, Business Central offers native REST APIs; older NAV installations often use SOAP web services.

For production use, the protocol matters less than the question of what happens when something fails: how failed transfers are detected, logged and retried.
