Change log

The change log is the built-in feature in Dynamics NAV and Business Central that records who changed which field, and when.

The change log is switched on centrally in setup; you then define per table whether insertions, modifications and deletions are recorded. Each entry captures the timestamp, user, table, field and both the old and the new value. Evaluation happens through the change log entries, which can be filtered and exported.

The usual reason is traceability: who changed a vendor's payment terms, when was a price adjusted, why does a posting deviate from the order. In practice it is also the first tool to reach for when master data has changed unexpectedly.

Selectivity matters: enabling the log for every table produces a very large number of entries very quickly and puts noticeable load on the database. The common approach is to restrict it to sensitive master data and setup tables and to archive or delete entries regularly. The change log is also not a substitute for permissions — it records what happened, but prevents nothing.
