Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Navision)

Dynamics NAV, originally Navision, was Microsoft's mid-market ERP solution and has been succeeded by Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Navision originated in Denmark and was acquired by Microsoft in 2002. Numerous versions appeared under the Dynamics NAV name until 2018; the last was Dynamics NAV 2018. Microsoft then continued the product line as Dynamics 365 Business Central.

A central characteristic of NAV was its customisability through the C/AL language, which modified the standard code directly. This allowed far-reaching individualisation but made upgrades laborious, because customisations had to be merged again at every version change.

Older NAV versions no longer receive security updates. For companies still running them, the question is therefore less whether a move is due than when and at what scope.
