EU AI Act
The EU AI Act is the European regulation governing artificial intelligence, classifying applications by risk category.
At its core, the regulation distinguishes between prohibited practices, high-risk applications, applications subject to transparency obligations and largely unregulated applications. What counts is the purpose of use, not the technology involved.
For most operational applications — extracting invoice data or internal knowledge assistants, for example — manageable transparency obligations apply. It becomes more demanding where AI influences decisions about people, such as in recruitment or creditworthiness.
The obligations take effect in stages. For companies, what matters is therefore less a one-off review than the habit of classifying planned AI initiatives early — while the scope can still be changed without effort.
The EU AI Act for mid-sized companies: what you actually have to do
The AI Act also applies to companies that merely use AI. What deployer obligations mean, which systems are critical and what a pragmatic implementation path looks like.
